Gold Digger: When Worlds Unite

Ch. 3: Desperate Search

Jinnai

"This is not like him." Jinnai said. "He would have at least tried to communicate with us." The Elders were concerned about Takeshi's welfare. He should have arrived with the strodon with him hours ago and Takeshi is not one to be tardy. Everyone convened at the Central Tek Station to try and find their lost comrade.

"I don't understand. " One Elder said. Why has his comlink gone off-line?" It was obvious that when a pack member is lost, their well being is top priority. "What could have possibly happened out there for it to do so?" Another asked. " Jinnai, where was he the last time you heard from him?"

Jinnai thought for a moment. "He was in the eastern savannah if I recall correctly."

The Elders appeared to be in shock at the response." The Eastern savannah you say? Are you certain?"

"Yeah," Jinnai said, "so let's just go and get him, simple, right?"

A long silence filled the room.

At this point, Jinnai was getting concerned. "Well, what's wrong with the Eastern savannah? What could possibly be out there for you to give me the silent treatment? WHAT?"

"Jinnai please stay calm." Elder Yuen said silently. She seemed a little reluctant to say anything more, but she spoke up. "You remember the stories of the Demonic creatures that live in the shadows of the savannahs, don't you?"

"Only tales told to disobedient cubs." Jinnai said. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"Well, there not "Only tales" She cleared her throat. "They're the real things."

"What?"

"Alright, Yuen, that's enough," The Elder leader Naka intruded " I'll continue. Many moons ago, we underwent a mission to discover life in the universe, intelligent and unintelligent alike. A research party was sent to begin what would have been one of many expeditions. The plan was to find these planets, build teleportation centres on them just in case we wanted to return for further research and if the species were exceptional, the mission would cease just long enough to learn about them. There were many planets, but none that we thought were all too interesting. We were about to cancel the project when we got a transmission from our team. They found such a planet of Terrans, violent, unintelligent, but willing to learn, just the species we needed for research. They were then ordered to construct a teleportation centre on the planet's surface. While we were contracting a the main Teleportation centre, we received a message from the team the Terrans named Urth."

" I still don't see what this has to do with finding my little brother." Jinnai was getting annoyed.

"Quiet, Impatient one, be quiet and listen." He continued. " They said they found a fallen vessel quite a far distance away from their location and they were going to check for survivors. There were survivors and indecently, they were Kryn scientists. They wanted the Kryn to come with them to their base, but they claimed to have valuable information on the planet already and did not want to leave it unprotected. They recall, as they were about to leave their ship-experienced difficulties with their thrust engines and crashed back on Urth. Since they brought no engineers with them, they were stranded. Our men knew nothing of their machines, so they were of no help to them. Nonetheless, they had decided to stay with the Kryn and learn what they have learned already in exchange for their ride home. We had long finished our Centre and we said it was all right for them to relax for a while. Many years later, we received another transmission. The Kryn and our men had decided to return to their base to finish the teleportation centre and leave. When they arrived, the Centre had been overrun with Terrans. Instead of forcing them to leave, they lived with them for many years, learning their ways. As some of our men finished the Centre without the Terrans knowing, the others decided to do a little traveling. They returned years later and thought it would be prudent to share their knowledge with the people. The villagers hailed them as gods, but they did not need such things to keep them from going home. "

"After the teleportation centre was complete, it was time to leave. As promised the Kryn were teleported to the nearest Kryn ship and sent home. When it was the others turn, we were ready to pick them up. We activated the gate. As the machine roared, the gate formed a strange shape. What surprised us was that it was alive! We figured that we picked something up by accident and tried to send it back, but it forced its way in. It was a hideous creature of monstrous size and could hide itself in the shadows. It began to slaughter our people, and at the same time our research team was coming thought the teleportation gate. We had no time to send them back and they shared the same fate as the others; we never had a chance."

"If that's true," Jinnai inquired, "why are you still here?"

"The fortunate few that were able to escape including myself, ran for home to the south. We could still hear the screams a good mile away." Naka said with sadness.

"And this creature has decided to set up shop in the eastern region, right?" Jinnai asked.

"It would appear so." Elder Yuen answered. "We tried to kill it, but with no avail. All we know is that it has been breeding somehow and has used the gates to get around."

"Well, I guess I have no choice but to go there myself and get my brother." Jinnai replied.

"Absolutely out of the question!" Elder Naka shouted. "For all we know he could already be dead, why would you risk your life?"

"Have you all become cowards? Have memories of the past destroyed your courage? If so, then you should have died out there with the others who at least tried to fight." Jinnai looked around and saw no words of resentment "I thought so. You are all afraid." Jinnai headed for the door.

"We tried to fight it, but it seemed to be immune to magic and our technological weapons." Elder Yuen explained. "You could try and fight it if you must but you will most certainly die out there." Yuen sighed. "Why do you want to risk your life for someone who is not even your biological brother. Someone who is alone in the savannah with no chance of survival?"

Jinnai stopped at the door and was silent. Then he replied, "Because I know how it feels to be alone. Takeshi wasn't the only one adopted into the pack, or has that little bit of information slipped your mind? Because of that, he is truly my brother." just then, a small grin formed on Jinnai’s face. "Besides, it sounds like fun."

"Since we cannot persuade you, all we can say is to be careful. And if Takeshi is indeed alive, bring him home to the ones that love him most."

Jinnai gave a nod of his head and ran into the night, in search of his brother. He did not know what he was to face when he arrived at the Centre, but if it had truly killed Takeshi.....

There would be hell to pay.
